Dr Ignasi Puig is one of the 14 authors from all over Spain who have helped to draw up the V Consenso sobre el tratamiento de la infección por Helicobacter pylori. The document was published in parallel by the two main Spanish journals specializing in the field of digestology, the Revista Española de Enfermedades Digestivas and Gastroenterología y Hepatología.
Helicobacter pylori infection is the most common chronic infection worldwide and is the leading cause of diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. The guidelines have been drawn up on the basis of a systematic search for scientific evidence and changes in the patterns prescribed so far. As a starting point, the consensus raises the requirement for effectiveness in recommended treatments, which must now reach, or preferably exceed, a 90% cure rate. The treatments recommended by this consensus are based on administering four drugs (a proton pump inhibitor, clarithromycin, amoxicillin and metronidazole), usually for 14 days.
The diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori infection is one of the lines of research of the Gastrointestinal Oncology, Endoscopy and Surgery research group (GOES), coordinated by Dr Puig. The group has published 18 articles on this infection, 12 in the last two years, for the most part in first quartile journals.
